December 15, 2025 – Chief of Staff meets with Honolulu Marathon runners from Japan

Chief of Staff Andy Sugg met with Japanese runners from Ichinoseki who participated in the Honolulu Marathon on Sunday, December 14, 2025.

A remarkable partnership spanning more than four decades continues to strengthen the bonds between Honolulu, Hawaii, and Ichinoseki, Japan, through a unique blend of athletic competition and cultural exchange.

For over 40 years, the Ichinoseki Half Marathon has served as the centerpiece of an enduring friendship between the two regions. Each year, this goodwill initiative brings together runners and artists, fostering international understanding through shared experiences in sports and creative expression.

On October 5, 2025, Hawaii’s delegation maintained this cherished tradition when 2 runners from Honolulu traveled to compete in the prestigious international half marathon. The athletic competition, however, represented only part of the cultural mission.

The Hawaii contingent brought with them 26 original drawings created by second-grade students from Maemae Elementary School. These heartfelt artworks were formally presented to the Mayor of Ichinoseki, symbolizing the next generation’s participation in this longstanding friendship.
